what is team sorting?

Team sorting requires that two riders move a herd of ten cattle in numerical order from one round pen into a separate adjoining pen in sixty seconds or less. There is a twelve foot opening between the two pens, and also two un-numbered ‘trash’ cows that are mingled throughout the herd. In both penning and sorting, the numbers do matter – so any cow that crosses the line, either out of order or carrying the wrong number, will result in a ‘no time’ for the team.

ATSA 2023 PRESIDENTS REPORT – OLDS AB

I’d like to first off thank all the members of this year’s ATSA Board – Elwood, Jason, Alan, Beau, Ronnie, Dayton, Ernie, Kansas & Carrie. We appreciate the efforts each of you has contributed this season.

2023 was the busiest season ever in ATSA’s 9-year history. We hosted 4 clinics, 10 days of events during the summer, weekend Finals, with almost 400 teams entered. The clinics were hugely successful, we saw around 100 riders participate, many of them new to Sorting. Lots of the new members came and entered shows during the summer and at least 15 have joined us this weekend for the finals. We tried a new facility in Bowden, the weather cooperated, a new cattle supplier was found, and it was a good show. Creekland Ranch in the North continues to help us host successful show with great attendance. We returned to the BullPen Arena this year and held 2 weekend shows there the cattle were good and they were very accommodating.

Our Sponsorship has evolved somewhat over the last year, we are very grateful to:

  • Cam & Blake Clark for their continued support, they have been our Major Sponsor since 2014. Cam Clark Auto Group provides all our Championship Buckles.
  • Mike Vida has continued his support of the club, he sponsors 2 Classes, City Ford #4 and the 2V Ranches WH#3.
  • Shoot-Out Productions has sponsored the #8 this year – thanks to Brad & Jerry for the additional support.
  • BullPen – Sponsor of the # 6 Class; they donated 3 herds of cattle this year.
  • Weaver Leather – Saddle Pads & Top Sort Sheets
  • Western Specialties from Stavely – provided the Headstalls this year.

There were 10 Cow Sponsors this year:

      ***   Sawby ¼ Horses   ***  Crestwood Veterinary Centre   ***  Western Truck   ***   D&D Ranch   ***                     ***  Aloha Acres   ***   Stonewood Homes  ***  Vantage Trailers   *** Patton Performance Horses  ***                  ***  Hillyards Black Pine Ranch   ***   1/4 Circle Charolais  ***

We also have donations from:   JT Livestock, Janice Wiebe, and Sort Arena.

A HUGE Thank You to everyone who has helped the club this season.

Special thanks to Colleen our Show Secretary again this season. Colleen not only  manages the show business and all the entries, but she also  volunteers her time to tend to the Banking, Invoicing, and Memberships.  Thank you, Colleen.  I’d also like to thank the rest of our Show/Event Staff: Paulette, Linda, Darlene, Kara, Sherry, Dave & Don. And our cattle Crew: Robyn, Kale, Alanah. We couldn’t play without you!

The finals weekend we were extremely happy with the almost 400 teams that entered. We are going to award $5000 worth of prizes, $5500 added money, and 60 % payouts. The continued support of the Membership and our Sponsors is greatly appreciated.

                                                                                      Thank You!

Graham Boyd
